At the center of the plot are two friends, Hunter (Virginia Gardner) and Becky (Grace Curry). A year ago, during a joint climb, Becky«s husband tragically died. To help her friend cope with depression and fear of heights, Hunter suggests they climb an abandoned 610-meter (2,000-foot) TV tower B-67 in the Mojave Desert and scatter the deceased»s ashes. However, the dilapidated structure treacherously collapses, and the heroines find themselves trapped on a tiny platform under the clouds, without communication, water, or equipment.

The film«s success led to the announcement of sequels, which are in development.

The Origins of the Idea: Fear as Inspiration

The idea for «Fall» was born to Mann and his constant co-writer, screenwriter Jonathan Frank, while working on a previous project. Standing on the roof of a London stadium, they reflected on the nature of fears. Mann himself has repeatedly admitted that he suffers from acrophobia - a fear of heights, and this personal experience formed the basis of the concept.

Initially, the story was conceived as a short film, but in the process it became clear that the inner world of the two characters required a full-length feature. Although the film is often compared to real stories of «rooftoppers» (urban climbers) and extreme sports enthusiasts, its plot is the fruit of the creators« imagination, not an adaptation of real events.

Difficulties of the Filming Process

Filming was complicated not only by pandemic restrictions, but also by the whims of nature. The schedule was constantly disrupted due to strong winds, and once a storm almost overturned the tower structure installed on a cliff. On another day, work had to be interrupted due to an invasion of flying ants.

Acting Work: Risk and Real Emotions

Despite initial plans to use stunt doubles, the actresses performed most of the dangerous stunts themselves, demonstrating excellent physical fitness. Their fear and despair on camera were genuine, although they were protected from falls by safety ropes. From frequent climbing on metal steps, Gardner and Curry developed painful calluses and blisters on their palms.

Scenes with vultures presented particular difficulty. «They are wild creatures, and we couldn»t train them. We had to adapt to their mood,« Mann shared in an interview.

How Technology Changed the Film«s Rating

The initial script and the actresses« improvisations contained a lot of profanity. This threatened the film with a strict R rating in the USA (viewers over 17), which would significantly narrow the audience. There was neither time nor money to reshoot dozens of episodes.

Then Mann turned to his company Flawless. Specialists used Deep Fake technology to adjust the actresses« lip movements in key frames, and then automatically re-voiced their lines, replacing swear words with more neutral ones. This allowed the film to receive a PG-13 rating (from 13 years), which opened the film to a family audience and positively affected box office receipts.

«Fall» has become an example of how digital tools can solve a critical problem at the post-production stage. The film remains a popular thriller, and its possible sequels await their time.
