Smoke blankets Transbaikal village as landfill burns for third day
The landfill cannot be extinguished
A landfill has been burning for three days near the village of Karymskoye, causing acrid smoke to hang over the settlement. This was reported to a correspondent of Chita.Ru by a local resident on January 29.
The dump is located 3–4 kilometers from the village. People are sending videos from the highway and the village itself, complaining about the smoke.
The head of Karymsky District, Oleg Pavlov, said the landfill was set on fire by an unknown person. Currently, authorities cannot start extinguishing it because the source of the fire is impossible to reach.
«It [the fire] has gone deep. Neither people nor heavy machinery can get there, so we can»t put it out for now. The level of burning is decreasing. It should go out on its own now and doesn«t pose any particular threat. The only thing is the smoke coming from it. We are monitoring for now,» said Pavlov.
