Ufa Cafe Grenade Attack After Mob Boss Killing

In the 2000s, when echoes of the «wild» showdowns were still heard across Russia, the Dema district of Ufa was shaken by an explosion in a cafe filled with patrons. The establishment was located on the property of Mukatdar Adigamov, nicknamed Uncle Misha, who had died not long before and was feared and respected by the entire neighborhood during his lifetime. The city began to talk about the incident as a new twist in the gang war. UFA1.RU recalls the details of the investigation and tells what happened to the main figure in the case.

The Rainbow Cafe was located on Ukhtomsky Street — the same place as the Olimp restaurant, which was considered Adigamov«s base. In this establishment in the 2000s, one could find Uncle Misha or his associates and turn to them for help.

Recall that Adigamov was a former wrestling coach who, back in the 1980s, organized a sports club in Dema where he gathered and trained tough guys to take control of the district. Over 20 years of his «reign,» he achieved almost unchallenged authority, but in early 2008, he himself fell victim to a bloody reprisal.

The death of Uncle Misha was followed by murders and arrests of his associates. That«s why the explosion in the cafe on »Adigamov«s land» was perceived by many as another twist in the war for territory. The Rainbow, it was believed, was taken over after the local boss«s death by members of another gang.

On the evening of October 16, 2008, a grenade was thrown into the cafe. Fortunately, all 18 people among the patrons and staff survived — only one of them was hit in the leg by a fragment.

«He was taken to a medical facility. His life is not in danger,» representatives of the republican department of the Russian Investigative Committee said.

Specialists from the department opened a criminal case under the article on attempted murder of «two or more persons.» Soon, a suspect was found — local resident Denis Fedorov, born in 1982. When law enforcement officers raided his home, he was just trying to patch up wounds that he himself had received from the explosion.

It also turned out that Fedorov went to the «job» with two grenades; the second one wasn«t needed, and he kept it with him. His father Anatoly stated that the weapon belonged to him — allegedly obtained from some friend back in the 1990s. According to one version, the elder Fedorov was previously part of Adigamov»s team, and the younger one went to take revenge on rivals for the death of the «godfather» of Dema.

However, these assumptions were not confirmed, and officially the motive was called «personal animosity.» As investigators said, during interrogation, the suspect stated that he threw the grenade into the cafe to «scare his acquaintance.» By the way, that person was no longer in the establishment at the time of the explosion.

Denis was sentenced to seven years in a strict regime correctional colony. He had previously been convicted for causing grievous bodily harm. His father was also punished — for illegal possession of weapons, he was sent to a settlement colony. Fedorov Jr. served his sentence in Shaksha IK-3, and in 2012, he applied for parole, and the court approved his request.

«He attends educational events, draws proper conclusions for himself. He complies with the regime requirements and internal regulations. In communication with administration representatives, he behaves politely. He regularly visits the library. He has three incentives, no penalties have been imposed. He participates in cultural and sports events of the unit and institution. He maintains family relations. He has embarked on the path of correction,» noted in the decision.

It is worth noting that later, in the file of the Dema District Court, a case appeared in which the main figure was Denis«s full namesake. He was accused of illegally acquiring two grenades in the autumn of 2015 and sentenced to one year in a settlement colony.

In 2020, the same name appeared in the »Defendant« column in a case about murder. The file contains testimony from one of the witnesses who, speaking about the defendant, mentioned the story with the grenade. According to the materials, Denis Fedorov was accused of stabbing to death the owner of a plot in the Lokomotiv gardening partnership, where he was temporarily living. More than 15 stab wounds were found on the neck and head of the deceased.

Fedorov denied the accusations, claiming that when he was awakened by another participant in the drinking session, the homeowner was already dead. Allegedly, she herself killed the man because he was harassing her. According to Denis, after that, he himself called the police to report what had happened, but was afraid that his innocence would not be believed, and he fled.

However, the testimony of other participants in the process indicated the opposite. Thus, one of Fedorov«s acquaintances reported how he came to him after the incident and told him that he had stabbed a person. Even the defendant»s own words, said immediately after detention, paint a picture somewhat different from his statements in court.

«The three of us were drinking alcoholic beverages in the garden house, after which I lay down on the sofa and fell asleep. After some time, I woke up because [the homeowner] struck me in the side. A veil appeared before my eyes. When I came to, [the homeowner] was sitting in the corner of the room. Whether he was alive, whether there was blood, whether there were knife wounds, I don»t remember. I had nothing in my hands. I got dressed and left,« stated in the material.

A forensic psychiatric examination was also conducted, which found that Fedorov easily gets irritated and is not always able to control his emotions.

»In response to remarks, violent outbursts of dissatisfaction, bitterness, irritation, and protest reactions may occur. Characteristic are emotional instability with ease of irritability reactions, conflictiveness, tendency to immediate realization of arising behavioral impulses, propensity for affective outbursts and externally accusing reactions,« noted the expert.

However, there were circumstances in the case that the court considered mitigating. In particular, the blow to the side that Fedorov received from the victim, as he himself told. Besides, Denis suffered from a severe chronic illness. Nevertheless, the court found Denis sane and sentenced him to eight years in prison.

In 2023 and 2024, he filed complaints about the actions of law enforcement, but the court did not accept them. The appeal against the sentence was also rejected.
