Two third-graders placed in detention center for assault

On January 30, two third-grade students were sent to a temporary detention center for juvenile offenders. They are accused of sexual assault on a 9-year-old boy, which occurred at one of the gymnasiums in Chelyabinsk. In total, three children are involved in the case, but the Tractor Plant District Court did not review the materials for the alleged instigator on that day.

Initially, the investigation considered only one child a suspect, while the other two were listed as witnesses. Only one boy was registered with the juvenile affairs inspectorate. In December of last year, the court refused to place him in the temporary detention center, and this decision is currently being appealed in the regional court. A final ruling is expected in February.

After the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, took control of the case, the two witnesses were re-interviewed and also registered. On January 30, the court decided to send them to a correctional institution for 30 days. In addition, the parents of all three children were fined under Article 5.35 of the Administrative Code for failure to fulfill their upbringing duties.

The mother of the victim reported that she was not allowed to attend the hearings, which were held in closed session. However, she expressed satisfaction with the court«s decision.

“At least it«s something; before the publicity, nothing was moving at all,” she stated.

The assault incident in the school toilet occurred back in September of last year. For several months, the victim«s mother could not secure punishment for the perpetrators, who had not reached the age of criminal responsibility. In January, she decided to make the story public, after which a criminal case on negligence was initiated against the gymnasium staff. The investigation was transferred to the 3rd department for investigating particularly important cases of the regional management of the Investigative Committee.
