Taxi driver’s self-defense claim featured on NTV

The story of taxi driver Dmitry Nikishin from Yekaterinburg was shown on the program «Za Granyu» on the NTV channel. For 50 minutes, experts and the driver«s relatives hotly debated the qualification of the charge. While the prosecution is sure that everything that happened is an attempted intentional murder, the defense claims that the taxi driver was simply saving his life (at most, he exceeded self-defense).

The first to be invited to the studio couch was the taxi driver»s mother, Olga Nikishina. She said that she did not immediately find out about what happened to her son, and heard about the incident from the TV.

«I was doing something in the kitchen and I hear, like, a driver from Yekaterinburg, Dmitry… I turn to the screen and suddenly see his beaten face. I started calling my children. It turned out that they hadn«t told me about it for a whole week! And our dad still doesn»t know — he has serious heart problems», the taxi driver«s mother recalls.

The woman came on the program to convince everyone — her son is not a murderer and not a marginal, he would never attack a person without reason. And all that happened is a consequence of self-defense. Criminologist and episode expert Alexander Shatalov disagreed with her.

«An outsider doesn»t distinguish whether it«s a real weapon or a toy pistol. Tell me, did he inform his employer that he carries a weapon because he»s afraid to drive around your Yekaterinburg? I think not. He convinced himself that you have a dangerous city and that one cannot move around it without a pistol», the expert stated.

At the end of the program, footage of a screaming boy was shown, and both sides came to the opinion that the main victims are the children. The accused«s daughter will likely not see her father soon, and the wounded man»s son received a serious psychological trauma when his father was shot in front of him.
