In the Orenburg Regional Court, after almost three years, the criminal case against 69-year-old Novotroitsk criminal authority Sergei Korchagin and his alleged «right-hand man» — 62-year-old Vasily Savvon — has reached the debate stage. As reported by colleagues from «Ural56.Ru», the prosecution has requested 25 years of imprisonment for the former and 18 years for the latter. The charges are extremely serious:

During a search at the crime figure«s home, a Scorpion submachine gun, documents, and other items were seized.

  • Article 210.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (occupying a supreme position in the criminal hierarchy);

  • Part 2 of Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code (murder);

  • Part 3 of Article 30, Part 2 of Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code (attempted murder);

  • Part 1 of Article 222 of the Russian Criminal Code (illegal acquisition and storage of firearms and ammunition).

Recall that the investigation believes Sergei Korchagin, nicknamed «Korchaga», founded and headed an organized criminal group (OCG) that operated in the Orenburg region from the 1990s to the 2020s. According to case materials, Korchaga instructed group members to organize and carry out murders for reward. He allegedly had the status of a «polozhenets» (a criminal authority position), which was conferred on him by the «thief in law» (vory v zakone) «Ded Hasan», plus he annually collected from 3 to 10 million rubles (approximately $30,000 to $100,000 at current rates) from entrepreneurs and personally appointed «smotryashchikh» (overseers) in the eastern part of the region and in colonies.

In December 2021, officers from the criminal investigation department in Orenburg, the Investigative Committee, and the FSB, with the support of the Rosgvardiya (National Guard), detained the man. The operation took place in the Moscow region. Three other individuals were also detained, with two caught in Orsk. Korchaga«s accomplices were charged with aiding and abetting attempted contract murder, which was not completed due to circumstances beyond their control, as well as aiding and abetting contract murder.

One of them occurred in 2000 (criminal authority Gennady Khvatlandzia, nicknamed «Abkhazets», was killed), the second — in 2005 (the shooting of two men on Novomoscovskaya Street: one died at the scene, the second survived after six wounds), the third — in 2008 (the murder of a man in the entrance of a house on Chernyshevsky Street), and the mentioned failed attempt — in 2006 (an explosion in the area of the Meat Processing Plant: the potential victim«s car turned out to be armored). In total, the initial charges involved attempted murder of seven people.

In April 2023, the Orenburg Regional Court began hearing the criminal case with a jury against Korchagin and Savvon (previously, property worth 12.5 million rubles (approximately $125,000) was seized from them).

On September 10, 2024, the same court scheduled an open hearing, but the defendants« motions for a trial with a jury were denied. On January 21, 2025, for this reason, both defendants declared an indefinite hunger strike. As became known from the last hearing, Korchagin and Savvon disagree with the charges and call them »fairy tales«.

Recall that earlier, the Orenburg Regional Court recognized 59-year-old Rashid Khachatryan (Rashid Jambulsky, Rashid Orenburgsky) as a «thief in law» (convicted under the article «Occupying a supreme position in the criminal hierarchy») and the same article is currently being applied to Zaur Shipilov (Zaur Nakhichyvansky).
