Tula Region gets double the normal January snowfall

The region recorded a record 92mm of precipitation last month, more than twice the average. It was among the national leaders for both precipitation and snow depth.

The Tula Region received a record amount of precipitation in January 2026, according to the Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.

Approximately 92 millimeters of precipitation fell in the region during the month, against a norm of 43 millimeters. This means 2.1 times more snow fell than expected.

Within the region, Yefremov was the «record holder» for snow, receiving 107 millimeters.

The region was also one of the leaders in Russia for snow depth. In Tula, snowdrifts reached 58 centimeters (about 23 inches). The regional leader was Aleksin, where drifts grew to 71 centimeters (about 28 inches).

The heaviest snowfall occurred from January 27 to 29 when a cyclone covered the region. These three days alone accounted for 44% of the monthly precipitation norm, or about 19 millimeters.
