The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) for Voronezh Region issued an emergency alert from meteorologists on Saturday, January 24. According to the hydrometeorological service, until January 27, anomalous frosts are expected in the east of the region: the average daily air temperature will be 7 to 13 degrees below the climatic norm and drop to -20 degrees Celsius (-4°F).

The forecast suggests that the severe frosts will continue to pose significant risks through Wednesday.

— In such cold, the likelihood of fires in residential areas and social facilities increases. There is a high risk of accidents on life support systems, communication lines, and power transmission lines, as well as disruptions in transport operations. Moreover, one can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite, — rescuers warn.

This means that emergency and utility services must switch to an enhanced mode of operation. However, it is unclear why only the east of the region is mentioned — where Borisoglebsk, Povorino, Novokhopersk, and Gribanovsky are located. In Voronezh itself, on the morning of January 24, it was -22 degrees Celsius (-8°F), and Yandex suggested that it feels like -24 degrees Celsius (-11°F). And according to the same local meteorologists, the cold snap will only begin to ease on January 27 — Tuesday.

By the way, currently in Voronezh, compared to not so distant 2010, it«s nothing: back then on January 24, the freezing temperature outside was -32.5 degrees Celsius (-27°F) — the historical minimum for that day over the entire period of meteorological observations. And the warmest so far is considered January 24, 1971, with spring-like +3.5 degrees Celsius (38°F). When city residents can expect a thaw, read in the article Voronezh1.ru.
