Malaya Pokrovskaya Street to Become Pedestrian Zone in January

Malaya Pokrovskaya Street in Nizhny Novgorod will be closed to traffic from January 28. Road signs prohibiting movement will be installed on the section from Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street to Arkhitektor Kharitonov Street, officially making this area a pedestrian zone.

The decision was made based on research conducted by Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University. As reported by the city administration, experts« conclusions showed that removing Malaya Pokrovskaya from the traffic scheme will not lead to significant changes and will not disrupt the operation of nearby streets.
The traffic reorganization will also affect neighboring streets. The authorities« plans include:
- widening the roadway on Maslyakov Street to four lanes with the organization of two-way traffic;
- modernization of traffic light facilities on Gorky Square near the Communications House, at the intersections of Bolshaya and Malaya Pokrovskaya Streets, Malaya Pokrovskaya and Gogol Streets, as well as at the junction of Maslyakov Street to Gorky Square;
- installation of new traffic lights at the intersection of Maslyakov Street, Pokhvalinsky Descent, Oboznaya Street, and Malaya Yamskaya Street.
‘In the new traffic scheme, a key role is assigned to Maslyakov Street, which allows removing the traffic load from Malaya Pokrovskaya Street, rethinking its purpose, and organizing a convenient pedestrian zone for a comfortable and safe connection between Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street and Ilyinskaya Street, as well as the Terraced Park being developed in the Pochainsky Ravine, the central entrance to which will be located on Arkhitektor Kharitonov Street,’ explained the city hall.
The idea to create a pedestrian zone on this section was presented in November. The initiative was brought to the city administration by the Community of Young Families.
