Evening snowfall paralyzes Volgograd's main roads

An evening snowfall that covered Volgograd completely paralyzed the city«s main roads. Drivers were stuck in giant traffic jams, and passengers were trapped in public transport. We look at the consequences of the raging elements — the winter snow that fell, becoming a severe test for Volgograd»s road and utility services.

Recall that a blizzard, turning into a classic winter snowfall, replaced the daytime frost in Volgograd on the evening of February 2. The first to feel the winter snow were the city«s main highways — the Second and Third Longitudinal Highways. Readers of V1.RU reported that almost instantly, the snow cover literally paralyzed University Avenue, where queues of heavy trucks formed endless columns from the Aquarel shopping center to the administration of the Sovetsky District. According to eyewitnesses, cars got stuck between trucks that couldn»t move uphill on asphalt turned into an ice rink.

‘Buses are still somehow getting through, but trucks are standing still. Car drivers are trying to bypass them somehow. However, couriers are working as if nothing happened,’ residents share.

Meanwhile, as readers report, drivers are trying to help each other in every possible way.

‘Vehicles are being pulled out by tractors. Traffic police officers are stopping crossovers and asking for help. No one refuses. One of the onlookers ran home to get a tow rope,’ an eyewitness reports. ‘As soon as one truck is pulled out, immediately, like snakes, barricaded cars and buses crawl out behind it, and some trucks that have enough traction to withstand the slippery road and blizzard.’
A similar situation has developed on the Third Longitudinal Highway. Motorists advise in chats to stay home if possible, otherwise the risk of getting into a huge traffic jam is very high.
Meanwhile, the State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI) reported that on federal roads through Volgograd Oblast, within the borders up to Voronezh, Saratov, Astrakhan, and Rostov oblasts, movement has been closed for heavy trucks and passenger vehicles.
