No Kurgan Athletes in 2026 Olympics, Sports Department Says

Athletes native to Kurgan have participated in the Olympic Games multiple times. The Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Kurgan Oblast stated in response to a 45.RU inquiry that athletes from the Trans-Urals region are not taking part in the Olympics this year.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held in Italy, in the cities of Milan and Cortina d«Ampezzo, from February 6 to 22.

In 2024, Kurgan native Danil Lavrentiev was selected for the Olympic judo team. However, he did not get to compete in the Paris Olympics due to the Russian Judo Federation«s decision to refuse participation in the Olympic Games.

Prior to that, in 2014, biathlete Yana Romanova participated in the Sochi Olympics, winning a silver medal. In the Paralympics, skier Elena Remizova competed. According to the regional sports department«s website, more than 20 athletes born in Kurgan Oblast have participated in the Olympic Games over the years.

Previously, we reported that 13 Russians are going to the Olympics in Italy under a neutral status, including figure skaters Adelia Petrosian and Petr Gumennik, skier Daria Nepryayeva and other athletes in seven disciplines.
