4 February in the church calendar is dedicated to the memory of the holy apostle from the seventy, Timothy of Ephesus. In folk tradition, this day was called Timothy the Half-Winter: it was considered the conditional middle of winter. And yes, according to old signs, after this date nature can arrange a series of strong blizzards, so that no one forgets where their mittens are.

What is remembered on February 4: Historical background

Timothy lived in the 1st century and was born in the city of Lystra in Lycia (Asia Minor). According to tradition, he met the Apostle Paul when he healed a lame man: the man became healthy, and this amazed Timothy. He believed in Christ, left his former life, and became Paul«s companion.
The Apostle Paul especially distinguished Timothy among his disciples, called him his beloved son, and thanked him for his loyalty and devotion. Before his execution, Paul called Timothy for a final farewell. Shortly before this, he ordained him as bishop of the Ephesian Church, which Timothy led for about 15 years.
According to church tradition, Timothy died a martyr«s death during a pagan festival in Ephesus: he tried to stop people carrying idols through the streets, but the crowd attacked him, and he died from the beatings. In the 4th century, his relics were transferred to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.

Folk omens

It was believed that the day indicates what the rest of winter will be like.

If the windows fog up, a thaw is approaching.

  • If there are frost patterns on the windows, cold weather will linger.

  • If the sun is shining, an early spring was expected.

  • Snowfall promised a good harvest.

  • If snow sticks to trees, winter is coming to an end.

    What you can do

Check supplies and organize closets: anything extra suddenly becomes very redundant.

  • Do handicrafts and household chores when it«s snowing outside.

  • Go for walks and sledding if the weather permits and common sense doesn«t object.

  • Remember your dreams: according to belief, they may come true.

  • The day falls on Wednesday, so according to church tradition, observe fasting.

    What not to do

Do not be wasteful: the day seems to remind you of economy.

  • Do not be lazy or idle: folk tradition did not approve of this.

  • It is better not to take out the trash.

  • Do not set off on a long journey: it was believed that the trip could turn out unsuccessfully.

Timothy«s Day in the folk calendar is simultaneously about memory, order in the house, and attention to details, including the weather outside. Winter, if you believe the signs, can still show its character, but you have every chance to respond with your organization.
