According to the Daily Mail, US President Donald Trump is considering a proposal to pay each Greenland resident one million dollars. These funds would serve as compensation if the island«s population votes to join the United States.

As reported by Axios, the discussed agreement project within NATO does not imply the transfer of sovereignty over the Danish autonomy to the US. However, the document includes:

  • deployment of the «Golden Dome» missile defense system, which American specialists are working on;
  • updating the defense agreement between Washington and Copenhagen, concluded in 1951.

Greenland is part of the Danish kingdom as an autonomy. Trump first voiced the idea of purchasing the island during his first presidential term. Now his rhetoric has hardened: he stated that the US will achieve the goal «one way or another». Earlier, Republican congressman Randy Fine introduced a bill to annex Greenland, and the Trump administration imposed customs duties on goods from a number of European countries. In response, the Prime Minister of Greenland began preparations for a possible military invasion.

At the Davos forum, Trump stated that Greenland strategically belongs to the United States, emphasizing that only America can guarantee its security. He refuted the opinion that Washington«s interest is solely due to the island»s natural wealth. The president called the historical decision to «give» Greenland to Denmark a mistake and warned that refusal of the deal would be perceived negatively. After this, Denmark rejected any negotiations on transferring the territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the topic of US claims on Greenland does not concern Russia. At the same time, he noted that the United States could carry out the purchase of the island if it is sold for a price comparable to that for which Russia sold Alaska.
