On January 23, the first meeting of the tripartite working group on resolving the Ukraine crisis began. Talks involving delegations from Russia, the United States, and Ukraine started in the UAE.
Earlier, Sky News reported on the start of talks between the countries. However, this information has not been officially confirmed. The channel«s correspondent did not know whether the Russian and Ukrainian delegations were in the same room.
The Ukrainian publication Strana noted that arriving delegation members might have started informal discussions in advance. Ultimately, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced the start of the meeting.
«Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed the holding of tripartite talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States in Abu Dhabi, expressing hope that they will contribute to steps aimed at ending the crisis,» according to a statement from the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A TASS source reported that this stage of the talks will be as closed off from journalists as possible.
Presidential aide Yury Ushakov earlier noted that before departing for Abu Dhabi, Kremlin representatives received specific instructions from the president of Russia Vladimir Putin.
The American and Ukrainian delegations want to propose a partial ceasefire to Russia, the Financial Times newspaper reported. This involves Russia stopping strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, and Ukraine, in turn, ceasing to attack Russian oil refineries and tankers of the so-called shadow fleet.
It is noted that the American side«s representative, Steve Witkoff, will also hold separate talks on economic issues with the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriev. They will discuss the »Peace Council« and Russia»s readiness to allocate $1 billion to the organization«s budget from Russian assets frozen by the previous US administration.
