Macron Plans Call to Putin

French President Emmanuel Macron is preparing for a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to TASS news agency on 5 February, citing a French source, preparing a substantive conversation will take several days.
“Preparing a substantive conversation will take not one day, but definitely several days,” the agency quotes the source, who emphasized Macron’s focus on achieving results.
News of the planned call emerged after a visit to Moscow by the French president’s chief diplomat, Emmanuel Bonne. He visited the Russian capital on 3 February for personal meetings with officials. In particular, a meeting took place with Yuri Ushakov, the Russian president’s chief foreign policy adviser. The French president’s office reiterated Macron’s intention to resume dialogue with Moscow.
The idea of resuming negotiations with Russia was also supported by other European politicians:
- Estonian President Alar Karis
- Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa
Their statements came amid a broader trend in which some European countries are showing a desire for closer involvement in the peaceful resolution of the situation around Ukraine.
