Iran Publishes List of Protest Victims

The administration of Iran's president published a list of citizens killed during recent mass protests on February 1. The list contains 2,986 names, while the official death toll is 3,117 people.

The list of individuals killed during recent protests in Iran was published by the presidential administration on February 1 on the official website of the head of state.
In a statement, authorities said: “By order of the president ... a list of 2,986 people killed in recent incidents has been published, compiled based on names prepared by the country«s forensic medicine and cross-referenced with data from the Civil Registration Organization.”
Each entry in the published list includes the first name, last name, patronymic, and the last six digits of the national code of the deceased.
There is a discrepancy of 131 names between the official death toll (3,117 people) and the number of names in the list. As authorities explained, the identities of these victims have not yet been established, and their names will be presented in an additional list.
Mass protests in Iran began in late December. Initially, they involved shop owners and students expressing dissatisfaction with the authorities« actions amid a sharp drop in the national currency»s exchange rate and rising prices. Subsequently, the protests spread to all provinces of the country.
According to estimates by activists and Western media, up to 30,000 people may have been killed as a result of the suppression of protests.
