Epstein Files Leak Reveals Russian Political Connections

The alleged «Russian trace» in declassified U.S. Justice Department documents and why the Epstein case endures as a cultural phenomenon.
The U.S. Department of Justice has published the largest batch of documents in history related to the case of Jeffrey Epstein, a financier accused of creating a system of sexual exploitation of minors. Hundreds of gigabytes and millions of pages of correspondence, screenshots, testimony, and official materials have been dumped into the public domain, mentioning the names of top politicians, billionaires, and members of royal families. The documents have triggered a surge in conspiracy theories, essentially baseless accusations, and discussions about elite impunity. Russian surnames appear in the files. But what does this prove? Details are in the material from Fontanka.
Who is Jeffrey Epstein and why is he being discussed again?
Jeffrey Epstein was an American financier arrested in 2019 on federal charges of trafficking minors for sexual exploitation. In 2008, he was caught red-handed, pleaded guilty to less serious charges, and received a relatively light sentence, for which the U.S. public sharply criticized the country«s prosecutors.
In August 2019, Epstein was found dead in his cell at a New York prison. The official version is suicide, but the circumstances of his death, including violations of prison protocol, raised many questions and conspiracy theories.
The source of Epstein«s wealth, whom the media called an »investment financier,« is not entirely clear. In his youth, he worked as a teacher, and then suddenly began a career at the investment bank Bear Stearns. In the early 1980s, he founded his own firm managing assets for incredibly wealthy clients. His fortune was estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars. Epstein became known as a philanthropist donating money to science and as a man with serious connections. His circle included U.S. President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton, British Prince Andrew, scientists, and show business stars. He owned a private island in the Caribbean Sea (Little St. James Island), real estate in New York, Florida, and New Mexico.
Chronology of «Epstein-gate»
First case (2005–2008). The investigation began after a statement from the parents of a minor. Epstein was accused of creating a scheme where girls were lured for a «massage» that escalated into sexual acts. In 2008, a pre-trial agreement was reached—the one that caused public outrage. Epstein pleaded guilty only to two state charges, avoiding federal charges that threatened him with life imprisonment. He received only 13 months in prison, and even those were served in comfortable conditions. This agreement was secretly coordinated by the then federal prosecutor Alex Acosta.
Second case and arrest (2019). After a journalistic investigation by the Miami Herald in 2018, the Justice Department resumed Epstein«s case. In July 2019, the »financier« was arrested and faced new federal charges of sex trafficking minors and organizing a criminal enterprise. He faced up to 45 years in prison. He apparently decided not to wait for the outcome.
Was there evidence of Epstein«s guilt?
The investigation relied on testimony from more than 80 victims who described the scheme of recruiting women and minors into a criminal network of sexual exploitation. During searches, hundreds of explicit photographs were seized, as well as documents resembling ledgers with names. A key figure accused of conspiring with Epstein was British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell. In 2021, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
What exactly did the U.S. Justice Department publish now?
In January 2024, by decision of a federal judge, a large-scale declassification process began for documents from civil lawsuits by victims against Ghislaine Maxwell. This process was called the «release of the Epstein files.» Essentially, these are materials from a civil court case (sworn testimony, witness lists, correspondence). They are not a criminal indictment and contain both facts and unsubstantiated claims.
The documents mention over 150 individuals—from victims and accused to employees and famous guests. That is, the mere fact of being mentioned in the context of a party or flight does not mean that the mentioned person is truly guilty or involved. The documents also detail the mechanism of recruiting girls.
What is being said about all this in the U.S.?
American society is literally tearing the «Epstein files» apart. Republicans are using the documents to attack the democratic elite, primarily Bill Clinton—like, look who has been playing the innocent all these years. Democrats point to the lack of evidence of Clinton«s crimes in the documents, emphasize Epstein»s acquaintance with Donald Trump, and the role of the Trump administration (where that same Alex Acosta worked) in trying to slow-walk the case.
Victims and their lawyers are also dissatisfied. They call the publication an «imitation of transparency,» as many names and fragments in the files are blacked out.
Are there Russians in the declassified Epstein documents?
There is no direct evidence of connections between Russian public figures and Epstein«s criminal network in the official documents. But Russian surnames are found. For example, in analytical materials from Western media attached to the case, politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky is mentioned—but there is no talk of any contacts with Epstein. Also mentioned is a model named Raya, who allegedly worked at a modeling agency in Krasnodar and knew English well. The agency»s general director categorically denies involvement in the «Epstein case.»
On social media, rumors are actively circulated about the mention in the files of Maria Drokovova—a former photo model and commissioner of the youth movement «Nashi.» However, Drokovova«s name is absent from all official court documents in the Epstein case, declassified by decision of a U.S. court. She is not in the victims» testimony, witness lists, or guest lists. According to the British publication Byline Times, in 2017–2018, Drokovova worked in the U.S. as a PR specialist for Epstein, but there is no evidence of her involvement in criminal activity.
Where do the rumors and «facts» come from? They originated in 2020–2022 from unverified leaks on Telegram channels and shadow forums. These data have never been verified by the FBI, the U.S. Justice Department, or authoritative media.
The «Epstein case» as a perfect media storm
The story has become a catalyst for media infighting among elites in the West. In the Russian internet, following a similar scheme, a demand arose: «And who from ours?» The figure of a public but not officially immune person (like Drokovova) became a convenient target to fill the information vacuum.
There are no official statements from Russian authorities. State media cover the case in the context of scandals in Western elites.
The global development of the scandal continues. Banks (for example, JP Morgan) are paying multi-million dollar compensations for servicing Epstein«s accounts, and any mention in the context of the case causes colossal reputational damage. For example, Prince Andrew, when his acquaintance with Epstein surfaced, lost all titles and connections with the British royal family. The Epstein case has become a symbol of the fight against elite impunity and will likely influence the public and political agenda for a long time, at least abroad.
