Ferry sinks off Philippines, leaving dozens dead and missing

An inter-island ferry has sunk off the coast of the Philippines, with over 300 people on board, at least 15 of whom have died, according to the Associated Press citing local authorities.
«Rescuers have saved at least 215 passengers,» the publication states.
Meanwhile, 43 passengers are listed as missing, and a search and rescue operation is underway.
As clarified by the Philippine Coast Guard, the ferry was traveling from the city of Zamboanga to the island of Jolo. On board were 332 passengers and 27 crew members. The vessel experienced technical issues near the island province of Basilan.
«Maritime accidents in the Philippine archipelago are common due to frequent storms, poor vessel maintenance, overcrowding, and lax safety regulations, especially in remote provinces,» the agency notes.
The search continues with the support of the Philippine Navy and local fishing boats.
Earlier, the ferry KM Barcelona VA caught fire off the coast of Indonesia. The vessel had 280 passengers. To escape the flames, people had to jump into the water, and they were pulled out by rescuers.
