18 Tons of Virus-Infected Tomatoes Returned to Uzbekistan

In the Novosibirsk Region, over 18 tons of tomatoes were seized due to a virus. This was reported by the press service of the Siberian Interregional Directorate of the Rosselkhoznadzor (Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance).

Last week, an inspector of the agency conducted a quarantine phytosanitary control of a batch of tomatoes. He found signs of tomato brown rugose fruit virus.

The vegetables were brought to Novosibirsk from Uzbekistan by truck with a phytosanitary certificate. Tests revealed the presence of the virus. Sale of the tomatoes was banned. On January 28, the Rosselkhoznadzor inspector received documents on the return of the batch to the sender.

It is specified that the tomato brown rugose fruit virus belongs to the genus Tobamoviruses and is not dangerous to humans. It poses a risk to solanaceous crops and can destroy 30–80% of the harvest.

Earlier, NGS wrote that in Novosibirsk, the director of a sushi restaurant was convicted after 43 people were poisoned at the establishment were poisoned.
