People over 50 need to regularly undergo a series of key examinations to maintain their health. This was stated by oncologist Roman Goncharuk of the Medical Complex of FEFU (Far Eastern Federal University), director of the School of Medicine and Life Sciences at FEFU.

‘The goal of examinations after age 50 is to detect the most common and clinically significant tumors,’ the doctor explained.

The recommended schedule for key examinations includes:

colonoscopy — once every two years;

  • EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) — once every three years;

  • fluorography or chest X-ray (or low-dose CT scan as prescribed by a doctor) — annually.

    The doctor also emphasized the importance of gender-specific diagnostics. Women are recommended to undergo mammography every two years and have a pelvic ultrasound if indicated, Goncharuk added in a conversation with RIA Novosti. Men, on the other hand, need to have an annual blood test for PSA (prostate-specific antigen), as well as undergo transrectal ultrasound as prescribed by a doctor.

    It is important to monitor one«s health at any age. If you want to know what tests are needed when preparing for pregnancy, read our article.
