Scientists recorded 18 solar flares of class M (moderate) and X (highest class) in the past 24 hours Moscow time, and 19 worldwide. The active region on the Sun expanded its area by 50% in a day and set a new record for the number of strong flares. This was reported on the website of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI RAS) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP SB RAS).

A G1-class magnetic storm is forecast for Friday, February 6.

«In both cases, it is the second-highest number in a decade. The first place is still held by December 29, 2024 (23 events),» the statement said.

It is specified that until midday Friday, February 6, the active center will remain in the zone of direct impact on Earth. Repeated flares or mass ejections could trigger the onset of magnetic storms.

Magnetic storms are sharp fluctuations in Earth«s geomagnetic field. They often arise from energy releases on the Sun. Scientists rate magnetic storms on a ten-point scale. Storms up to five points are considered minor, while stronger disturbances are classified on a scale from G1 to G5.

According to the forecast, the nearest G1-class magnetic storm is expected on Friday, February 6. The evening before, the magnetosphere will be disturbed.

What to do for weather-sensitive people

As Alexander Krylov, leading engineer at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute (SAI MSU), told MSK1.RU, magnetic storms can be dangerous for people with cardiovascular diseases.

«Typically, flares are average. There is no way to escape this radiation. The only thing is, it»s better to stop your activities a bit on these days. Especially, don«t go outside, lie down, watch TV—lead a passive lifestyle. Because this (magnetic storms) greatly affects the health of heart patients,» he said.

Unpleasant symptoms may include weakness and drowsiness. For those who feel the effects of weather and climate changes, doctors recommend monitoring their fluid intake and avoiding salty and spicy foods—they can cause a rise in blood pressure. The diet should include more vegetables, fruits, fish, greens, and nuts.
