Risky surgery saves SMO combatant's leg in Samara

In a Samara hospital, they saved the leg of a participant in the special operation. The combatant sustained an injury to his right thigh while performing a combat task. Since the wound, he had been confined to a wheelchair with an unhealed fracture.
Doctors at the Pirogov Hospital discovered that the femoral artery was fused with bone fragments. Performing the surgery was risky because if the artery was damaged during the procedure, it would cause massive bleeding, and the limb would have to be amputated.
«We assembled an in-hospital council of traumatologists, a vascular surgeon, and an anesthesiologist-resuscitator. During it, we determined that surgical treatment was inevitable. As a result, we avoided artery rupture and massive blood loss, and managed to save the limb,» said Alexander Reznichenko, head of the 30th traumatology department.
On the second day after the surgery, the patient stood up. Now he moves independently on crutches.
At the end of 2025, at the Pirogov Hospital, they successfully operated on another participant of the SMO. He injured his arm after stepping on a mine.
