The procedure was performed on a patient at the Clinical Oncology Dispensary No. 1. There, doctors used stereotactic radiosurgery — the idea is to irradiate only the tumor, leaving healthy tissue untouched. This is the main advantage over conventional radiation therapy.
Special 3D visualization systems and individual fixation devices for each patient ensure precision, said Kuban Health Minister Evgeny Filippov. The specialists applied the new method to treat a brain metastasis — the procedure was successful.
According to Alexander Klenevsky, chief medical physicist at the dispensary, a linear accelerator delivers a high single dose of radiation directly to the tumor. This allows treatment duration to be reduced to 1–5 sessions, while conventional radiotherapy typically takes several weeks.
Previously, such technology was only used in Moscow clinics and large cancer centers.
In autumn, a huge tumor weighing 13 kilograms was removed from a patient in Krasnodar.
