After a brief warming period, when air temperatures did not drop below -6...-8 degrees Celsius (21...18°F), forecasters predict frosts of up to -20°C (-4°F) by the end of the week. Road and municipal enterprises in the city have begun preparations for the upcoming temperature swings.

As reported by the city committee for improvement, streets are being treated with anti-icing materials, with increased attention paid to sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and embankments. Highways and squares are being cleaned around the clock. At stops and fences, over 1,000 workers from municipal enterprises and nearly as many units of specialized equipment are engaged today.

Over the past 24 hours, more than 34,000 cubic meters of snow have been removed from the city«s streets. At the popular snow-melting point on Oktyabrskaya Embankment on January 20, a queue formed from dump trucks delivering snow for disposal.

Meanwhile, residents continue to report unremoved areas that require the attention of municipal services:

  • At houses 17-19 on Furshtatskaya Street, according to residents, a snow hill has not been cleared for over two weeks.
  • The public transport stop «Yuzhnoye Cemetery» at the intersection of Pulkovskoye and Volkhonskoye highways has turned into a dangerous zone. «A regular stop has become a dangerous zone that people have to literally wade through, risking their health. The snow at the stop is ankle-deep. Now it has started to melt, and the situation has become even worse: the melting snow has turned into slush, water is getting into shoes. The surface is slippery,» shared a local resident.
  • Significant snowdrifts are complicating pedestrian movement on the section of Moskovsky Prospect near houses 181-185, close to a residential complex.
