MChS: Frosts in St. Petersburg to intensify to -20°C

The Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) for St. Petersburg has issued a warning about a significant cold snap. Overnight temperatures could drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius (-4°F).

An official warning about severe frosts has been issued by the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) for St. Petersburg. It is based on data from the North-Western Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.
According to the forecast, in the evening and night of January 31, as well as the morning of February 1, the air in some parts of the city will cool to minus 20 degrees Celsius (-4°F) or lower.
The meteorological center «FOBOS» predicts that on the night of Sunday, February 1, the temperature will range from minus 18 to minus 20 degrees Celsius (approximately -0.4°F to -4°F). On the day of February 1, warming is expected only to minus 13-15 degrees Celsius (8.6°F to 5°F).
The upcoming night could break the record for the lowest temperature this winter. The day before, the thermometer dropped to minus 17.6 degrees Celsius (0.3°F), nearly matching the absolute minimum for the season, recorded on January 5 (minus 17.7 degrees Celsius or 0.1°F).
