Persistent dense fog and high humidity have created an unusual effect in St. Petersburg. Key city landmarks, including the Alexander Column on Palace Square and the columns of St. Isaac«s Cathedral, were found covered in a thick layer of frost, which was noticed during the day on January 20.
Weather conditions in the city have remained largely unchanged since Sunday. As the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) previously warned, heavy fog has been hanging over St. Petersburg on Monday and Tuesday.
The fog has caused several incidents. In the Kronstadt area, a fisherman who went out onto the ice of the Gulf of Finland was unable to find his way back. In the Leningrad region, a group of fishermen was carried away on a detached ice floe.
Rescue services are urging citizens to refrain from venturing onto the ice and to exercise increased caution on the roads due to poor visibility. According to forecasts, a cold snap is expected to reach the region in two days.
