Alpine Skiing Champion and Coach Yekaterina Vogulkina Dies

Legendary Soviet alpine skier and coach Yekaterina Maksimovna Vogulkina has died in Yekaterinburg at the age of 99. The news of her death was reported by the specialized portal ski.ru.

The publication quoted a farewell message:
«On her hundredth year of life, the legend of alpine skiing of the Union and Russia, Vogulkina Yekaterina Maksimovna, has passed away. The oldest coach and teacher. Thank you to her for, with her pedagogical talent, she raised not only excellent athletes but also simply guided into adulthood a huge number of Sverdlovsk youth … Eternal Memory!»
Vogulkina competed for the USSR national alpine skiing team for five years. She twice climbed to the top step of the podium at the national championships: in 1947 and 1949.
After completing her sports career, Yekaterina Maksimovna dedicated herself to coaching. From 1958 to 1981, she was a coach-instructor at the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute. During this period, the institute«s team consistently led in the Burevestnik sports society. In 1960, she headed the Sverdlovsk region alpine skiing team.
She did not stop her coaching activities almost until the age of 90, working at the Ukuts Mountains sports school. Under her guidance, more than ten USSR Masters of Sports grew up, as well as champions of the country and the Spartakiads of the Peoples of the USSR and RSFSR.
Yekaterina Vogulkina«s contribution to sport was marked by state awards, including:
- the Order of the Badge of Honor;
- the badge «Excellent Worker in Physical Culture and Sport».
