Watching humorous series is an excellent way to recharge after a workday, fill leisure time on weekends, and temporarily step back from pressing problems. They create an illusion of escape from reality, offering in return what we often lack in everyday life: loyal friends next door, an eccentric boss and colleagues ready for harmless madness, as well as a world where life«s complexities are taken to the grotesque and perceived with a smile.

The show follows the mundane yet hilarious daily operations at the Dunder Mifflin paper company.

It is this unique ability of sitcoms—to combine a reflection of our lives with comedic exaggeration—that underlies their enduring popularity. MSK1.RU has gathered a selection of the best comedy series capable of brightening a boring January evening.

Friends« charm lies in its portrayal of easygoing camaraderie among six pals in New York City.

The Office (18+)

From the creators of The Office, this sitcom focuses on the quirky employees of a small-town parks department.

Dunder Mifflin is a paper sales company. Its branch in Scranton is staffed with employees who languish from idleness. The team is amused by the behavior of the quirky manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell). A grown man with a childlike mindset, he completely lacks the ability to empathize, is not distinguished by tact, and his jokes are often inappropriate. Michael hardly deals with his direct duties: more often he delivers absurd speeches to those around him, puts forward delusional proposals, and gets involved in ambiguous romantic stories. Among other office workers are the cute administrator Pam (Jenna Fischer), her secret admirer Jim (John Krasinski), the eccentric assistant manager Dwight (Rainn Wilson), and others.

A standout Russian sitcom, The Kitchen offers original humor set in a bustling Moscow restaurant.

The American series The Office is an adaptation of the British sitcom that was released in 2001. It was created and starred comedian Ricky Gervais, but the project did not become popular in Britain and ended after two seasons. Taking on the remake in 2005, the authors of the American version corrected previous mistakes, making not only the manager but the entire team the main characters. The humor here does not follow fashion trends, and in the background, truly dramatic plot lines develop. The key charm of the show lies in the precise combination of comic exaggeration and realistic situations.

Community is known for its genre-bending episodes that parody everything from sci-fi to animated films.

Friends (18+)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine blends cop comedy with timely social commentary, all set in a New York precinct.

Six friends live in New York: they communicate all day, fall in love, quarrel, work wherever—from cooking to sales in a store,—and most importantly, constantly gather either in a huge apartment or in a favorite cafe. Their life resembles a bright fairy tale: they are young, attractive, always together, and practically burdened by nothing serious. This series became the perfect refuge from reality for millions of viewers worldwide—a place where coziness, warmth, and endless jokes reign.

Scrubs revolutionized the medical sitcom with its single-camera format and blend of comedy and drama.

Although Friends is in many ways similar to other popular sitcoms like Seinfeld—the same cozy New York world, the same company always spending time together,—here the characters are not cynical misanthropes but truly close people. They support each other, and even their flaws look cute. The success of the show is built not on complex plots or fancy filming, but on the amazing «chemistry» between the six actors. From the very beginning, the creators bet on an equal ensemble, where each character has their own recognizable personality, and the viewer inevitably finds themselves in someone.

The most charming thing about the series is the feeling of lightness and goodwill. They are together not because they are connected by work or kinship, but simply because they want to be nearby. The best moments are when the whole company gathers for a card game, argues over trifles, or cannot go home, prolonging the conversation well past midnight. This is a story not about neurotics, but about real friendship, which is so pleasant to observe from the side.

Parks and Recreation (18+)

In a small town in the USA, complete silence and order reign. The only thing that slightly unnerves the inhabitants is a huge pit dug right near their homes. To deal with the problem, an employee from the parks and recreation department named Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) decides. She is full of energy and enthusiasm, and the monotonous service does not burden her at all—on the contrary, it gives strength for future victories. Her boss Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) is a grumpy department head who is already tired of working for the good of society and wants to communicate with people as little as possible. Other workers under his command also do not burn with desire to work and cope with their duties somehow.

Parks and Recreation is a project by the very people who came up with The Office, Greg Daniels and Michael Schur. It was planned that the comedy series would be a spin-off from The Office, but in the end, it went its own way. However, there are still similarities with the predecessor: funny weekdays in an ordinary work team, the mockumentary genre, the eccentric boss Knope. Well, the most comical figure here is the inimitable Nick Offerman in the role of the eternally dissatisfied official.

The Kitchen (18+)

Maxim Lavrov (Mark Bogatyrev) is a young guy from Voronezh, Russia, who decided to try his luck in Moscow. He gets a job as a cook in the fashionable capital restaurant «Claude Monet» of Dmitry Nagiev. In the kitchen under the leadership of chef Viktor Barinov (Dmitry Nazarov), Max has to start from the very bottom—he is a simple assistant who cleans vegetables day after day. And with the manager Victoria Sergeevna (Elena Podkaminskaya), he develops heavy and abusive relationships, where both suffer and hope that everything will work out.

The series The Kitchen is a rare Russian-quality and funny sitcom that does not borrow Western ideas but presents its own, original ones. At the same time, it has everything we love so much about series of this genre: comic scenes, brisk editing, lively characters, and life situations familiar to all of us—especially employees of catering establishments will rejoice, who in the face of the eternally drunk chef and the smug owner may recognize their own bosses.

Community (18+)

Greendale Community College is not too popular with applicants. Accidentally and each with their own goals, a motley company ends up there, destined to become close friends. It includes the charming lawyer Jeff (Joel McHale), who lost his law license, the impulsive blonde Britta (Gillian Jacobs), the lonely mom Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), the diligent excellent student Annie (Alison Brie), the inseparable pals Abed (Danny Pudi) and Troy (Donald Glover), as well as the eccentric elderly student Pierce (Chevy Chase). They study together, and during breaks, they regularly meet in the lounge—to chat or once again argue with the dean (Jim Rash).

The gimmick of the series Community is in how it plays with the hackneyed scheme of «a bunch of losers gathered—see how funny.» Each episode mimics and at the same time parodies a new genre: from science fiction to post-apocalyptic action films to animation altogether. The project is not afraid to break standards, offering instead of template plots frank and inventive absurdity. Community is perfect for those who are tired of standard jokes and ridiculous mishaps in classic sitcoms.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (18+)

A new boss appears in one of the Brooklyn police precincts. This is Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher)—a serious and seasoned officer. He almost immediately realizes that his unit is a gathering of uncontrollable employees, and the biggest slacker among them is detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg). Holt sets himself a goal—to turn him into a normal police officer.

The series comically portrays the daily life of cops, does not forget classic jokes about donuts, but sometimes touches on acute problems, such as abuse of power by law enforcement. The authors skillfully balanced between humor and seriousness, listening to the audience. Brooklyn inherited the style of the series The Office and Parks and Recreation: shooting with a «shaky camera,» sharp zooms and turns, although there is no direct communication between the characters and documentary cameramen here. These shows, like Brooklyn, are united by another important technical point: shooting with one camera, without an audience in the studio and without laugh tracks, unlike popular sitcoms of the 1990s and early 2000s, like Friends or How I Met Your Mother.

Scrubs (18+)

Hardly having received diplomas, JD (Zach Braff) and his friend Christopher Turk (Donald Faison) begin working as interns in a hospital. At first, everything falls out of Jay«s hands: either he cannot meet an attractive nurse, or the janitor tries to intimidate him, or he himself faints at the sight of a syringe. However, learning from an experienced mentor—Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley), JD gradually settles in, grows professionally, achieves his goal, and finds happiness in personal relationships.

Scrubs appeared on screens in the early 2000s. The series was innovative: instead of the usual multi-camera shooting, the creators chose a single-camera format. This allowed viewers to feel the real rhythm of the clinic—constant running, bustle, and movement of staff between wards. In addition, the series boldly combined comedic situations with serious dramatic scenes, which was also not quite usual for sitcoms of that time. And already in February of this year, Scrubs will return to the screens, along with the main cast.
