Governor's Orchestra Takes Over Lenfilm Sound Atelier

The Governor«s Symphony Orchestra held its first open rehearsal in the Lenfilm sound atelier on January 23. This space in the studio»s 10th building, which had been practically unused since the early 1990s, has now become a permanent rehearsal base and recording studio for the ensemble.
As conductor Anton Lubchenko noted, the orchestra, previously known as the Leningrad Radio and Television Orchestra, already had experience working in this studio, where it recorded music for films in the past.
The need for a new space also arose because the orchestra«s previous rehearsal base had become too cramped, and for joint rehearsals with a choir, they had to search for additional halls.
Lubchenko added that in St. Petersburg, there are almost no studios left suitable for a large orchestra. The House of Radio is closed for renovations, the Lendoc hall is planned to be transferred to the Mariinsky Theatre, and at the Melodiya studio on Vasilyevsky Island, where a Lutheran parish is now located, recordings are only possible three times a week.
The orchestra moved to Lenfilm under a long-term lease. Lubchenko expressed confidence that the hall«s history will start a new count: here not only will great music sound again, but the city»s recording industry will also find a new home.
The director of the Tchaikovsky Center for Musical Culture emphasized the symbolic nature of the event: The coming year 2026 is the 120th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich. It is symbolic that we are opening it right here. At Lenfilm in 1938, directors Grigory Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg created the legendary film «Vyborg Side». And now here, for the first time, Dmitri Shostakovich«s score for the film will be performed in full, including fragments that were not included in the film.
