Blogger Elizaveta Bebekh described her car trip from Moscow to Krasnaya Polyana in the Yandex Travels journal. She covered 1,700 kilometers one way for snowboarding. She shares details with readers: how much the journey cost, how she managed it, and gives advice for fellow road trip lovers.

Costs

Financially, traveling by car is comparable to flying. It«s cheaper if you go in a group of 3–4 people. Main expenses:

fuel;

  • toll sections of the M4 «Don» highway;

  • a possible overnight stay on the way.

    At the same time, you save:

    on luggage (especially if you«re bringing skis or snowboards);

  • on transfer from Sochi airport to Krasnaya Polyana;

  • on taxis between resorts.

    Fuel

    Elizaveta traveled with two more friends. The car was a large diesel station wagon, fully loaded with gear and belongings.

    «For such conditions, I estimated an average fuel consumption of about 10 liters per 100 kilometers — taking into account the winter road and the serpentine on the last section,» writes the blogger.

    The distance from Moscow to Krasnaya Polyana is approximately 1,700 km one way. Let«s calculate:

    3,400 km round trip × 10 liters / 100 km = 340 liters of fuel for the entire route;

  • the average fuel price on the highway is 75 rubles per liter (about $0.83 at current rates).

    Total for fuel: 340 × 75 rubles = 25,500 rubles (about $283)

    Divide this sum among all trip participants — 8,500 rubles per person for fuel round trip (about $94).

    The road from Moscow and toll sections

    «We decided to leave at 5:00 a.m. to avoid heavy traffic and to be in Krasnodar by evening, make a long stop there, have dinner, sleep, and then continue with renewed energy,» writes Elizaveta.

    The first hundreds of kilometers flew by in one breath — they drove on the high-speed toll highway M4 «Don» with its smooth surface and wide lanes. They prepared for the trip, taking tea in thermoses and snacks to avoid unnecessary stops. As a result, the stretch from Moscow to Krasnodar took 13 hours with pauses only for refueling.

    During this time, the travelers passed more than ten toll points. The toll roads in both directions cost about 10,000 rubles (about $111): the exact toll depends on the time of day and day of the week. Rates can be checked on the website of Avtodor, the operator maintaining the section.

    Mountain serpentine

    From Moldovanovka — a village near Tuapse — begins 170 kilometers of real mountain serpentine.

    «Looking at this distance, I thought: »Oh, we«ll be there in about two hours.» In reality, we climbed for more than four hours! This mountain section is difficult, tedious, and winding. One lane, trucks crawling uphill, old Ladas with local drivers unfamiliar with the «no overtaking» rule, and endless loops. The serpentine tests both patience and endurance: even I, as the driver, started to feel car sick,« asserts the blogger.

    The only way to endure the serpentine is to relax and enjoy the views, recommends Elizaveta. Almost the entire time the road runs along the sea, and the scenery is worth stopping at a viewpoint.

    The surroundings of Krasnaya Polyana

    A car in Krasnaya Polyana makes life much easier, the blogger believes. You can freely move between resorts, and after skiing go to a bathhouse or to the sea.

    «It»s a 10–15 minute drive between the mountain resorts Rosa Khutor, Gazprom, and Krasnaya Polyana itself. The parking situation is not ideal, but tolerable. At Gazprom there is a paid covered parking lot — a convenient option, though once we waited quite a while at the exit,« writes the traveler.

    At Rosa Khutor it turned out to be more difficult: spots are few, many tourists leave their cars along the road by the lowest lift station, but Elizaveta chose the large open parking lot at the «Rosa Stadium» mark (940 meters) or near the «Volchya Skala» (Wolf Rock) lift (1,170 meters), right in the skiing area.

    «To go to Polyana by car or not? Yes, but only if you consider the road as part of the journey. Also, the entire trip should be at least 8–10 days, so you don»t have to rush and can set aside at least one day after arrival for rest,« believes the blogger.

    Pros of a car trip:

    Unlimited luggage. You can take as many things as you want and not adjust to airline rules. The blogger brought not only a snowboard but also a longboard to ride along the Adler embankment one day. This is heavy and oversized luggage that you can«t take on a plane.

    Savings when traveling in a group. If you don«t go alone, a car is a cost-effective option. The round trip cost about 11,000 rubles per person (about $122), including toll sections and fuel. A flight from Moscow with oversized luggage would have been one and a half to two times more expensive.

    Freedom of movement on site. At any moment you can drive to Sochi or Adler to stroll along the sea.

    Flexibility with the return date. You are not tied to a return flight. If a snowstorm starts in Polyana and you want to stay for a snowy day on the slopes, you can leave later.

    Cons

    Fatigue. The road is exhausting.

    Monotonous toll highway. Long sections of the M4 are smooth, predictable, lulling, which dulls attention. This requires discipline and concentration.

    Exhausting serpentine. The mountain section at the end of the journey was the car traveler«s least favorite. Not only is it difficult, but the time to pass it can exceed 3–4 hours.

    Parking quest. You have to constantly think about where to leave the car. If you«re unlucky and the search drags on, there will be less time for skiing. And arriving on the slopes later than usual is undesirable: queues grow, slopes get worn out, and the day doesn»t feel as successful.

    Tips for road tourists

    Check the latest information about the highway before departure. Road works, temporary speed limits, new toll sections — all of this can affect the timing.

  • Take tire chains just in case. Chains are inexpensive and most often sit unused, but in case of snowfall in the mountains, they can save the situation.

  • Rest well before the serpentine. The mountain section requires focus, so driving it tired is a bad idea.

  • Take turns at the wheel. Even if you think «I»m still okay,« the monotonous road and long straightaways dull your attention.
