The line from Pushkin«s work »How Dandy Londoner is Dressed« was not a neutral characteristic. In that era, dandies were often viewed with dislike.
The word «dandy» quickly became international and is still used in speech. At the same time, the term «macaroni,» which in the 18th century referred to English fashionistas imitating Italian flamboyance in clothing, has fallen out of use today.
The beginning of the 19th century was a time of radical changes in men«s wardrobes: silhouettes, materials, and colors changed. It was then that the foundations of the modern classic suit were formed. However, dandies, unlike today»s businesspeople, were never in a hurry. According to one version, they even walked pet turtles to train slowness and maintain composure.
Details about men«s fashion of the Pushkin era will be revealed by Nikolai Onegin — a candidate of cultural studies and senior researcher at the Hermitage. During his presentation, he will explain special terms, talk about famous beauties of Europe and Russia of that time, and demonstrate photographs of preserved clothing items from various world museums.
The event titled «»How Dandy Londoner is Dressed«: Men»s Fashion of the Pushkin Era« will take place on February 3 at the Indigo St. Petersburg-Tchaikovskogo hotel at the address: Tchaikovsky Street, 17. It starts at 19:00. Additional information can be found on the hotel»s website.
