The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia has taken an interest in the pricing of bread and baked goods in Volgograd. While residents are still recovering from the shock of price increases after the New Year, the regional office, on orders from the central office, will check the cost of bakery products from not only sellers but also producers.

«On instructions from the central office of the FAS Russia, the regional office will study the justification for wholesale and retail prices on bread and bakery products made from wheat and rye-wheat flour set by regional market participants,» the regional FAS office reported. «The financial and economic indicators of both bread producers and their sales organizations for 2025 will be analyzed. If grounds are found, the agency will take antimonopoly response measures.»

A source at the agency told V1.RU«s editorial office that the check is related to bread»s status as a socially significant product. However, a check on vegetable prices, particularly tomatoes and cucumbers that have become literally golden, is not yet planned by the agency — the next check will affect the price of chicken eggs.

In the spring of that same year, following a complaint to the FAS, an auction with an initial price of almost 94 million rubles ($1,044,400) for the lease of photo and video recording systems for paid parking lots was canceled. And in 2023, the agency checked the rise in chicken meat prices, acknowledged its existence, but called it small.
