In the Omsk region, fresh cucumbers have sharply risen in price over the past week. According to Omskstat, as of February 2, the cost of a kilogram of this popular vegetable reached 332 rubles (about $3 at current rates). The price increase over the week was 11.3%.
Over the past two months, fresh cucumbers in the region have doubled in price. On December 1, their cost was 153 rubles per kilogram (about $2 at current rates), on December 15 — 177.9 rubles (about $2), and on January 12 — already 249 rubles (about $2). Also in January, tomatoes rose from 231 to 249 rubles per kilogram (both about $2 at current rates).
The rise in fresh cucumber prices is a seasonal phenomenon. This vegetable is grown in greenhouses, and in winter, farmers« costs for heating and electricity increase sharply, leading to more expensive products. Traditionally in spring, cucumber prices, like greenhouse tomatoes, drop sharply.
