Construction of a gold extraction plant (GEP) has begun at Nornickel«s Zabaykalsky division (Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant). The expected commissioning date for the plant is late 2027 to early 2028, according to Nornickel»s website, citing the words of First Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Yevgeny Fyodorov.
“In the Zabaykalsky division, the company has commenced construction of a gold extraction plant. The project will improve overall recovery, increase volumes, and accelerate gold production. The commissioning for industrial operation is planned for late 2027 to early 2028,” he said.
The plant will be built in the Gazimuro-Zavodsky district. The facility«s capacity will reach 2.7 million tons of gold ore per year. The GEP project will reduce the company»s dependence on external plants. The plant will ensure the creation of new jobs and an increase in tax contributions.
In 2025, at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), an agreement was signed for the construction of a GEP by the Bystrinsky Mining and Processing Plant in Zabaykalsky Krai, worth 31.5 billion rubles (approximately $315 million at current rates).
The Bystrinsky project is one of the largest mining and processing enterprises in the Far East, with a processing plant capacity of 11.3 million tons of ore per year. The enterprise extracts gold-copper-iron ores and produces gold, copper, and iron ore concentrates.
