What Nizhny Novgorod looks like in online reviews – seven illustrations

“Capital of sunsets”, “most beautiful center”, “city of rude people”: online, you can find hundreds of reviews about Nizhny Novgorod and its iconic places. People read them, for example, when preparing for a trip or moving to our region. NN.RU used neural networks to create illustrations of how the city appears in these comments.

Tourists and locals share opinions about Nizhny Novgorod on review sites and online maps. There are both positive and negative comments. Last year, for example, the city«s rating was lowered due to internet problems and unpleasant smells. We selected seven vivid reviews about the capital of the Volga region and turned them into illustrations.

A Russian worker, solid and serious

“Main impressions of the city — a big city, a Russian worker, solid and serious. The vast Volga expanses, steep banks… Lots of charming antiquity: from wealthy merchants« stone mansions to more modest wooden buildings,” says one of the most popular reviews.

A city on high ground

“Of course, I liked the historical part with the Kremlin, the funicular across the river, and the beautiful buildings the most. You can wander here for a long time, visiting numerous cafes near the embankment. As for the downsides, I can only note that you constantly have to go down and up. The city is both on a hill and in a lowland,” shared Yulia.

A city of contrasts

“However beautiful Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street may seem, its beauty fades after entering the inner courtyards. It feels like they haven«t been restored since they were built. Very often in the city, you come across old wooden houses declared unsafe. But even worse is that historical buildings neighbor new offices and residential buildings, which are also built tall. You don»t feel harmonious,” said a user.
Filled with endless bustle
“Boats — perhaps the most frequent attraction for city visitors. The view from the Volga is indeed very beautiful, no doubt about it. The embankment deserves your attention especially during sunset <…> Overall, there«s nothing special in the city. You can go to museums and look at different monuments, maybe for you they will be something amazing. For me, this is a city filled with endless bustle,” wrote Valeria.
Capital of everything
“Nizhny Novgorod was closed for a long time, so it hasn«t received proper tourist attention. And at the same time, it is the capital of the Volga region. Later, this city was also called the capital of street art — and that is absolutely fair. New murals appear with enviable regularity. Another title the city received for its incomparable sunsets. Agree, the sunsets are top-notch! And here, they started holding hot air balloon festivals. And it looks incredibly spectacular and unusual,” shared Alexandra.
Frightening transport
“Transport — it«s simply a nightmare. Ugly, rusty, and dirty buses, crammed with a hundred people at a time. As a tourist, I got scared when I was pressed into a corner and they started passing their cards so I could pay for someone else»s fare!” exclaimed a user.
An ancient city
“Nizhny Novgorod is an amazing city where every corner breathes history and culture. Its majestic location at the confluence of two rivers creates a unique atmosphere. Ancient streets, temples, and merchants« mansions transport you to the past, allowing you to feel the spirit of the era. Be sure to visit the Kremlin, the Chkalov Staircase, and local theaters. Be sure to visit the Kremlin, the Chkalov Staircase, and local theaters,” believes Evgeny.
Last year, urbanist blogger Artem Shenderovich reviewed Nizhny Novgorod. He praised the picturesque views and the large number of well-maintained parks and embankments. But criticized the city«s transport system, calling it the “weakest side” of the capital of the Volga region. What else is written about our city online can be read in a separate article.
