Frosty and snowy: February weather forecast for Yugra

February in Yugra (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug) will begin with abnormal frosts, which by mid-month will give way to warmer weather and snowfalls. This conclusion can be drawn from forecasts compiled by different online services.

Yandex.Weather
According to the Yandex.Weather website, the beginning of the month (February 1–3) will see the peak of cold. In Khanty-Mansiysk, Surgut, and Nizhnevartovsk, daytime air temperatures will drop to -29…-31°C (-20…-24°F), with nighttime lows of -35…-38°C (-31…-36°F). The sky will be mostly clear, with no precipitation.
In the first decade of the month (February 4–10), it will warm up. Daytime temperatures will rise to -8…-16°C (18…3°F), with nights at -11…-19°C (12…-2°F). Heavy snowfalls are possible. An exception will be February 8 and 9, when the air temperature may drop to -16…-22°C (3…-8°F) during the day and -20…-28°C (-4…-18°F) at night.
According to preliminary forecasts, in the second and third decades of February the weather will be unstable. Fluctuations from moderate frosts (-16…-22°C / 3…-8°F) to brief thaws up to -8…-14°C (18…7°F) are expected by the end of the month.
Gismeteo
The Gismeteo.ru service gives a less severe forecast. In Khanty-Mansiysk, Surgut, and Nizhnevartovsk, the coldest days will be February 1 and 2. Daytime air temperatures will range from -29 to -33°C (-20…-27°F), with nights from -36 to -39°C (-33…-38°F).
On the remaining days, the lowest daytime temperatures will be -25…-26°C (-13…-15°F) (on February 8 and 9). The warmest day will be February 28, when the air warms to -8…-11°C (18…12°F). February is expected to be cloudy and snowy. There will be very few sunny days.
World Weather
As forecast by the World Weather service, in the first half of the month in Khanty-Mansiysk, Surgut, and Nizhnevartovsk, daytime temperatures are expected from -9 to -33°C (16…-27°F). In the second half — from -8 to -17°C (18…1°F). The coldest night in all cities will be February 2, when the air temperature drops to -36°C (-33°F). According to the service, sunny days will also be few: in Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut — 5–6, and in Nizhnevartovsk — only one (on February 13).
Russian Hydrometeorological Centre
According to the Russian Hydrometeorological Centre, the average monthly temperature in most areas of Yugra will be within the climatic norm. However, in the eastern part of the district, a deviation of 1°C below the norm is possible.
Precipitation levels in the district are also expected to be within the climatic norm, but, unlike the dry previous season, February this year is forecast to be more «snowy». At the beginning of the month (February 1–3), due to severe frosts, the probability of significant snowfall is low. The main mass of precipitation in the form of snow is expected from February 4, when the Arctic cyclone is replaced by warmer and more humid air masses.
Earlier, we reported that a powerful northern lights lit up the sky over Yugra. Bright green-pink shimmering lights were observed in Nizhnevartovsk, Surgut, Khanty-Mansiysk, Nefteyugansk district, and other parts of the region.
