According to information published by the agency AVG Nedvizhimost on January 21, the bakery market in the city is showing a decline. Experts estimate that in January 2026, there are 2,302 bakeries operating in St. Petersburg.

The current figure is practically identical to the data from November 2023, when the city had about 2,300 such establishments. Earlier, in August 2025, the number was 2,390, and in spring 2024 it exceeded 2,450.

The agency«s owner, Anna Guseva, linked the situation to increased competition. »In 2024, the market was overheated: outlets were opening faster than stable demand was forming. In 2025–2026, a natural cleansing began — first and foremost, bakeries in weak locations and premises with inflated rental rates are closing,« she notes.

A similar trend is observed in other large cities, but the dynamics differ. Specialists at AVG Nedvizhimost emphasize that in Moscow, the reduction is more gradual, whereas the St. Petersburg market «passed the phase of active growth faster and just as quickly transitioned to decline.»

The forecast for 2026 suggests that development will primarily occur through redistribution: the opening of new outlets will be compensated by the closure of unsuccessful ones, and the overall volume of supply will remain close to current levels.
