Since February, passengers of Ural Airlines have gained the ability to carry larger hand luggage in the cabin. Maximum dimensions have been increased to 55 centimeters in length, 40 in width, and 25 in depth.
According to the airline, the innovation increases the useful volume of hand luggage by approximately 25%. This allows passengers to bring on board without extra charge most standard suitcases that previously often did not meet the restrictions.
The updated standards apply to all flights departing from February 1 inclusive, regardless of the route and ticket purchase date. Weight limits, however, have not changed: for economy class — up to 10 kg, for business class — up to 15 kg.
Allowable carry-on luggage sizes vary significantly among different carriers. In Russia, in addition to Ural Airlines, similar parameters (55×40×25 cm) are in effect for Aeroflot and Rossiya Airlines.
Other Russian airlines have different restrictions:
- S7 Airlines allows a depth of up to 23 cm with a length of 55 cm and width of 40 cm;
- Pobeda requires that hand luggage fits into a 36×30×27 cm sizer;
- Utair in the basic fare limits dimensions to 40×30×20 cm.
Among foreign carriers, standards are generally close to European:
- Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines allow bags up to 55×40×23 cm;
- Air France and KLM allow an increased depth — up to 25 cm with a width of 35 cm;
- Among low-cost carriers, the rules are stricter: Ryanair only allows a bag up to 40×20×25 cm for free, Wizz Air — up to 40×30×20 cm, and Pegasus Airlines on international flights with the basic fare — up to 40×30×15 cm and weighing no more than 3 kg.
