Northern lights dazzle Perm region during magnetic storms

Photographer Alexei Zinoviev set up his camera on a tripod with a two-second exposure to capture this shot
As scientists predicted, on the night of January 21, powerful magnetic storms covered Russia, and the northern lights lit up the sky. In Perm, it was cloudy, but residents of the region were able to admire the beauty. We show it to you.
On the night of January 20, a plasma cloud from the Sun hit the Earth, triggering the strongest geomagnetic storms. Residents of various parts of our planet saw the northern lights a day earlier than initially assumed by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAN).
Regarding visibility in Perm Krai, as is often the case, residents of the north were luckier — it was already quite frosty and clear there. In Krasnovishersk, clear figures were seen that were «drawn» by the magnetic storms.
«According to the forecast, it was cloudy for us too, but when I saw the stars, I went to wait,» 59.RU photographer Alexei Zinoviev said. «With the naked eye, it»s barely distinguishable; only long-exposure photography allows you to see all the beauty. I shot with a camera on a tripod, two-second exposure, with a phone you need to wait at least eight seconds.«
A subscriber of our Telegram channel, Sergei, noticed the flashes as early as January 20 at 20:50 and also in the north — at that moment he was in the village of Kochevo.
In the village of Pelym in Kochevo District, the aurora seemed to illuminate the entire settlement.
Other photos were published online, but the exact locations were not specified. Look at this beauty.
In Lysva, the night sky was lit up by a green aurora.
The head of the Telescope astroclub, Sergei Polishchuk, also showed photos of the aurora.
«Despite the cloudiness, across almost all of central and European Russia, the polar aurora could be observed through the clouds at times. The parameters were lower than the previous night, but still high. The Kp-index (a measure of solar activity, — Ed.) was 6-7, and the geomagnetic storm reached level G3-G4 and is still ongoing,» Sergei writes in his blog. «Red and green colors could be seen not only in the middle latitudes of Russia but also in the southern ones. In the photo, you can see how the sky over the Urals, despite the cloudiness, changed its colors and contrasts.»
Earlier, we showed what light pillars look like — they were noticed in Troishche at the end of December 2025.
