Altai Krai sees rise in immigration from abroad

Data shows the origin countries of people returning to the region.
Altai Krai is attracting an increasing number of people who have decided to return to their homeland. Last year, the region accepted about 900 compatriots, most of whom arrived from Kazakhstan. This allowed Altai Krai to take third place in the Siberian Federal District in terms of the number of accepted migrants, trailing only Novosibirsk and Omsk oblasts.
According to the regional government, the main flow of arrivals, more than 80%, are citizens of Kazakhstan. People are also moving to Altai Krai from Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Ukraine, and Turkmenistan.
Among the arrivals, 371 people are participants in the state program to assist the voluntary resettlement of compatriots living abroad, and 508 people are their family members.
The majority of migrants are of working age (62%), and there is also a significant share of minors (37%). The education level of the arrivals is quite high: 33.7% have higher education, and 56.6% have secondary vocational education. It is added that more than 80% of compatriots choose to live in the krai«s cities.
