State of emergency declared in Ryazan Oblast over heavy snow

Residents are urged to avoid travel as the regional Hydrometeorological Center forecasts heavy and prolonged snowfall. The local traffic police advise using public transport instead of personal vehicles during the severe weather.

An emergency warning was declared in Ryazan Oblast on the morning of Tuesday, 27 January. According to the Hydrometeorological Center, heavy and prolonged snowfall is expected.

The Ryazan regional State Traffic Inspectorate is asking residents to temporarily refrain from using personal vehicles, especially for long journeys.

«In inclement weather, we recommend preferring public transport to avoid the risk of road accidents,» the traffic police urged.

Those who still decide to drive are asked to avoid sudden maneuvers, drive below the speed limit, and maintain a safe following distance.

Roman Stepanov, head of the agrometeorological regime and climate department at the regional Central Hydrometeorological Service, told YA62.RU that the heaviest snowfall is expected on Thursday, 29 January. Forecasters expect the snow cover to increase by at least 10 centimeters (4 inches).
