By Thursday, a heavy snowfall is expected in the Ryazan region. This was reported by YA62.RU, citing Roman Stepanov, head of the agrometeorological regime and climate department at the regional Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring.

«On Thursday, the snow could become heavy, and in some places, even a weak thaw is possible. On Friday, precipitation will continue. We expect an increase in snow cover height by 10 or more centimeters. In the north of the Ryazan region, it could be more than 15 centimeters on top. Such snow cover height is above normal, and this will add inconveniences.

From Friday, the temperature will start to drop again. By the weekend, it could fall to -15°C (5°F) and below. But frosts are generally considered normal for the coldest month—January. We«ve just gotten unused to the frosts,» said Roman Stepanov.

Currently, the height of snowdrifts in the Ryazan region already exceeds the norm. Here is the snow cover in different districts:

  • Tuma (Ryazan region) — 46 centimeters (about 18 inches), twice the norm.
  • Ryazan — 39 centimeters (about 15 inches), twice the norm.
  • Yelatma (Ryazan region) — 36 centimeters (about 14 inches), one and a half times the norm.
  • Starozhilovo (Ryazan region) — 34 centimeters (about 13 inches), one and a half times the norm.
  • Mikhailov (Ryazan region) — 31 centimeters (about 12 inches), twice the norm.

The water reserve in the snow cover in some places, according to Stepanov, exceeds the norm by two times and is approaching 100 milliliters.

«This is how much water is in the snow. This is the water that will either be absorbed into the ground or flow over it if it doesn»t have time to freeze. From this data, it can already be said that there will be a flood in the Ryazan region,« warned Roman Stepanov.

Currently, it is difficult to determine how intense the flood is expected in Ryazan, since snowfalls and frosts do not stop. For now, there is ice on the rivers, but the water level may fluctuate closer to March—April.

The approximate timing will depend on what February will be like.
