Frosts below -40 degrees hit the Urals

Abnormally low temperatures have set in across Sverdlovsk Region, while in Yekaterinburg the weather remains relatively mild.

Severe frosts are persisting for a second day in a row across Sverdlovsk Region, with temperatures dropping below -30 degrees Celsius (-22 degrees Fahrenheit) in many areas. According to the Ural Hydrometeorological Center, on the night of January 23, thermometers in some parts of the region showed up to -42 °C (-44 °F). Readers have shared readings from their own thermometers, which recorded even harsher conditions.

The lowest temperatures were recorded in the following localities:

  • Bobrovsky: -46 °C (-51 °F) (at 6:00 AM)
  • Irbit District: -45 °C (-49 °F)
  • Neyvansk: -44 °C (-47 °F)
  • Beloyarsky: -42 °C (-44 °F) (at 7:00 AM)
  • Alapayevsk District: -41.9 °C (-43 °F)
  • Degtyarsk: -40 °C (-40 °F)

In Yekaterinburg, the frosts are less intense. In the UNC microdistrict, -37.5 °C (-36 °F) was recorded, in Gorny Shchit — -36 °C (-33 °F), and in Polevodstvo — -35 °C (-31 °F).

According to meteorologists, the cause of such a severe cold snap was an anticyclone that arrived in the Urals on January 22. Due to the abnormal frosts, some schoolchildren have been switched to remote learning, and city streets have noticeably emptied.
