Forecasters issue Irkutsk weather forecast for real Siberian winter

Classic winter weather, typical for late January in Siberia, has set in in Irkutsk Oblast this week. Temperatures in most areas will be within the climate norm, in some places slightly below average, but overall severe frosts and hazardous weather phenomena are not expected. This was reported to an IrCity journalist by the head of the Irkutsk Hydrometeorological Center, Yulia Yankova.

“In the central, western, and southern districts, including Irkutsk, temperatures will be within the norm tomorrow, as well as on January 28 and 29. Only in the northern and Verkhnelen districts will it be slightly colder than usual, but there is an area of high pressure, an anticyclone, and a cold core there. Therefore, in the coming days it will be 2–5 degrees colder than usual,” the interlocutor warned immediately.

In Irkutsk, no precipitation is expected through Thursday inclusive. At night the thermometer will drop to –27…–30 °C (–17…–22 °F) or –26…–28 °C (–15…–18 °F), and during the day it will be from –14 to –17 °C (7 to 1 °F). This is the norm for late January.

“For Irkutsk Oblast for the coming night we forecast from –30…–35 °C (–22…–31 °F) to –37 °C (–35 °F), and during the day on January 27 from –15…–20 °C (5 to –4 °F) to –25…–28 °C (–13…–18 °F). In the northern and Verkhnelen districts at night down to –43…–48 °C (–45…–54 °F), during the day down to –27…–32 °C (–17…–26 °F),” noted Yulia Yankova.

On January 28 and 29 it will be slightly warmer across the oblast, but at night frosts down to –26…–31 °C (–15…–24 °F) are still expected, in some places down to –36…–41 °C (–33…–42 °F). In the Katangsky, Kirensky, Bodaibinsky, and Mamsko-Chuysky districts — down to –43…–48 °C (–45…–54 °F). During the day across the oblast down to –33…–38 °C (–27…–36 °F) is expected.
