February in Transbaikal: Colder than average, with brief thaws

Meteorologists predict the average February temperature in the Transbaikal region will be below normal, with both severe cold and a slight warming expected.

The average monthly temperature in February in the Transbaikal region is expected to be 1 degree Celsius (33.8°F) below the climatic norm, but there will also be sharp changes. The monthly weather forecast was provided by Chita.Ru on January 27 at the regional department for hydrometeorology and environmental monitoring.

In early February, a short-term warming is expected in most areas after the frosts that returned to the region at the end of January. The air temperature during this period will be -28…-33°C (-18.4…-27.4°F); in some places in the southern half of the region -20…-25°C (-4…-13°F), but in the northern areas it will remain cold: -40…-45°C (-40…-49°F).

During the day, the western half of the region will see -9…-14°C (15.8…6.8°F), and the eastern half — -18…-23°C (-0.4…-9.4°F).

During the month, the air temperature will drop again. The prevailing temperature at night will be -30…-35°C (-22…-31°F); in the northern areas — -38…-43°C (-36.4…-45.4°F). In the middle of the month, there will be an increase in temperature at night: in most areas — up to -20…-25°C (-4…-13°F). By the end of the month — up to -15…-20°C (5…-4°F).

The air temperature during the day is expected to be -8…-13°C (17.6…8.6°F); on individual days in the first decade — -13…-18°C (8.6…-0.4°F); in the northern areas — -18…-23°C (-0.4…-9.4°F). By the end of the month, in the southern half of the region, the temperature background may rise to slightly positive values.

Thaws of up to +2…+3°C (35.6…37.4°F) will also be observed. The monthly precipitation is expected to be around, and in some places above the norm, within 2–6 millimeters. Light snow is most likely at the beginning of the month during the warming, in the middle of the month, and in the third decade.

During the daytime, especially in the second half of the month, moderate winds will prevail. By the end of the month, in the southern half of the region, where the temperature will rise to positive values, the wind may occasionally strengthen to 15–18 meters per second.
