Don't Put Away the Shovels: A Snowy February is Forecast for Nizhny Novgorod Region

February 2026 in the Nizhny Novgorod region is expected to be snowy but warm. This preliminary forecast was published by specialists of the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) with reference to the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.
According to forecasters, the average monthly air temperature in the region is expected to be around -6 to -9 degrees Celsius (21.2 to 15.8°F). This is one degree higher than the average long-term values of -7 to -10 degrees Celsius (19.4 to 14°F).
At the same time, the monthly amount of precipitation in the Nizhny Novgorod region is expected to be above the long-term average. Specialists predict an excess of the norm, which is 25–40 millimeters (0.98–1.57 inches).
However, in the coming days, severe frosts are expected in Nizhny Novgorod. Tonight, the thermometers in the regional center will drop to almost 25 degrees below zero (-13°F). The city«s Department of Housing and Engineering Infrastructure explained how the capital of the Volga region is preparing for the cold snap.
In some parts of the Nizhny Novgorod region, nighttime temperatures may drop to -30°C (-22°F). Due to the severe frosts, the company Avtodor (Russian Highways), which owns the M-12 «Vostok» high-speed highway running through the region, has appealed to drivers. Motorists are asked to be more careful and avoid trips in bad weather. According to forecasters, the cold will recede by Tuesday, January 27.
