In the Novosibirsk region, February is expected to have blizzards that rarely occurred in January. This is stated in the forecast for possible emergency situations in the region for February 2025, published by the regional Emergency Situations Ministry. It includes a preliminary forecast for this month with a climatic assessment from meteorologists.

‘The main process determining February weather is the persistence of the Siberian anticyclone. However, in February, more often than in January, the anticyclone breaks down with the arrival of deep cyclones into Western Siberia, the lower reaches of the Ob and Yenisei rivers, and the movement of «diving» cyclones from the Barents Sea areas,’ the forecast says.

The average monthly air temperature in February across the region is -14…-17 degrees Celsius (-7…1°F), in Novosibirsk it is -16 degrees Celsius (3°F). The minimum temperature could reach -51 degrees Celsius (-60°F).

‘In February, clear weather predominates. Less precipitation falls than in any other month of the year,’ rescuers warned. ‘Blizzards are more typical for February than for January. The average number of days with blizzards is 3–10 days. The maximum number of days with blizzards ranges from 11 to 20.’

Wind strengthening to 15 m/s and more is observed annually, and in some years gusts can reach 22–25 m/s.
