Crowded Beaches or Untamed Nature? Sochi vs. Abkhazia for Summer 2026

Tour operators note that summer 2026 is just around the corner, so it«s time to plan a vacation. The most popular destinations for Russians are Sochi and Abkhazia. The publication Tourprom studied recent tourist reviews on social media, spoke with guides and hotel staff, and compiled an objective comparison to help you make the right choice.

Sochi and Sirius: Comfort in a Crowd?

A holiday in Sochi, Adler, and the Imereti Lowland is considered comfortable—there are modern hotels, well-maintained promenades, and entertainment. But the beaches are an acquired taste—they are pebbly. This isn«t critical, but it does create a certain discomfort. You won»t be able to take a leisurely barefoot stroll—it hurts. Water shoes are the solution.

The cleanliness of the sea in Sochi is a lottery. After heavy rains and storms, the water is murky, with algae, driftwood, and household debris floating in it. Sadly, the situation doesn«t improve during the high season due to the large number of vacationers.
In summer, the beaches of Sochi, Adler, and Imeretinka are packed. You need to stake out a spot in the sun early in the morning, and you can forget about peace and quiet. If you don«t like crowds, Sochi in July–August can be a real ordeal.
Abkhazia: Beautiful, but Service Leaves Much to Be Desired
Abkhazia attracts tourists with its pristine beauty, clean air, and more democratic prices.
The beaches in Gagra, Pitsunda, and Sukhumi are also mostly pebbly, but the pebbles are smaller and not as sharp as in Sochi. Pitsunda has sandy beaches, so there is a choice.
The sea in Abkhazia is deservedly considered cleaner than in Sochi. There are no major industrial enterprises, the population density is lower, and there is a special microclimate. Pitsunda is even famous for its crystal-clear seawater surrounded by relic pines. But in reality, it«s not quite so; if there are treatment facilities, they were built back in Soviet times. It»s better to swim away from populated areas.
Service in Abkhazia falls short of Sochi«s. The hotels are simpler, and the choice of entertainment is limited. But in recent years, the situation has been improving: new hotels are being built, and cafes and restaurants of European standard are appearing.

Besides this, there is «Sochi Park,» «Yuzhnye Kultury» (Southern Cultures), the Dendrarium. Many natural attractions.
In Abkhazia, you should definitely visit Lake Ritsa: an unforgettable trip to the mountains to one of the most beautiful lakes in the Caucasus. In second place by popularity is the New Athos Cave—an underground world with stalactites, stalagmites, and lakes.
Summary:
Sochi is for those who: are used to comfort and developed infrastructure, are willing to pay a higher price for it, are not bothered by crowds on the beaches, and want varied entertainment.
Abkhazia is for those who value nature, clean sea, and want to get away from the city bustle, are willing to tolerate weak service, but at the same time want to save money. Tour operators never hide the real picture of holidays in Sochi and Abkhazia and recommend not to raise expectations too high, then reality won«t disappoint.
