A true drama in Lisbon. By the 90th minute, José Mourinho«s team was beating Real Madrid 3:2, but they needed one more goal to advance to the playoffs. It seemed the players were unaware of this and were running down the clock. In the last minute of stoppage time, Benfica earned a dangerous free kick, and Mourinho gestured for Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to go into the opposition»s penalty area.

What followed was a moment that will surely go down in tournament history. A cross, Trubin outjumps everyone and heads the ball into the net — 4:2. Benfica advanced to the playoffs, and even their opponents congratulated Trubin.

Club Brugge — Marseille 3:0

Goals: Diaconu, 4 (1:0). Vermant, 11 (2:0). Stanković, 79 (3:0)

Marseille slumped to 25th place in Brugge and missed out on a playoff spot. The goal difference decided everything.

Another 16 teams will play in the play-off round. The seeded teams include Real Madrid, Inter, PSG, Newcastle, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, and Bayer Leverkusen.

Among the unseeded teams: Borussia Dortmund, Olympiacos, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Monaco, Qarabag, Bodø/Glimt, and Benfica.

The Champions League play-off draw will take place on 30 January. The first legs are scheduled for 17 and 18 February, with the return legs on 24 and 25 February.

Top scorers race

Real Madrid«s French forward Kylian Mbappé scored 13 goals. Second place in the scoring chart was taken by Bayern Munich»s English striker Harry Kane — with eight goals. Norwegian Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is one goal behind him.
