Details Emerge in Dzerzhinsk Deputy Detention Case

Deputy Yevgeny Monakhov did not appear at the plenary session of the city council on January 28, which concerned his colleagues. Earlier, on January 27, he was detained by law enforcement officers.

At the meeting, deputies turned to city mayor Mikhail Klinkov with questions about the fate of their absent colleague. The head of the administration responded: «I am not the Investigative Committee, so I advised everyone to address inquiries to the appropriate authorities.»

The investigation, according to preliminary data, is related to episodes of commercial bribery in the city council elections. The total amount that could have been collected from deputies is estimated at 50 million rubles (about $556,000 at current rates).

Other individuals involved in the same case include:

  • Maria Kilina, former executive secretary of the local branch of United Russia (Yedinaya Rossiya);
  • political technologist Mikhail Khaluga.

It is also reported that deputy Yuri Shakhunts was involved in the case. He wrote a confession, received witness status, and stated that he transferred money for the election campaign of United Russia.

Official comments from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) and the Investigative Committee regarding the detention of Yevgeny Monakhov have not yet been received.
